Public Positions

  • Founder of Festival St.Ives
  • South-East Regional Co-ordinator, Arts Council’s New Activities Committee
In this role, the choice was given as to how best to present the work of the region which work fell outside the artistic catergories at that time. Nicki mounted a Festival in St.Ives in 1969 which was dynamic and controversial. The outcome was the creation of a new funding body within the Arts Council. The St.Ives Festival continues to this day.
  • Brighton Festival: Nicki worked for the Festival for 7 years, under the Directorship of Gavin Henderson. She was a vital force in building the Literature Festival from Tours of the Sewers to its current status.

Nicki engaged in much outreach work, drawing in audiences from across the South-East.

Her formal public positions:

  • Writer-in-Residence 1987-89
  • Devising and running the series Brighton Lines 1990-91
  • Programme Consultant 1992-93

Her collaboration with Gavin Henderson and The Literature Committee was notable for her creation of themed weekends, informal audience access to writers and performers, conducting innovative writing courses. One example: a day workshop for those working with formal language such as lawyers, secretaries, medical personnel, wishing to break out of their ‘linguistic straitjacket’ and find a new creative language.
